The Best Festival Line-Ups of All-Time

Tastes differ, especially when it comes to someone’s favourite music. So, is it fair to list the 10 best festival line-ups of all-time?

Uuh no, and we know that, but we’ll do it anyway.

What do you think was the best festival line-up of all time?

10. Monsters of Rock, 1988

When? 4th September 1988
Where? Leicestershire, UK

The name says it all, Monster of Rock, a place where all rock giant’s come together to entertain the crowd at Donington Park.

With names like AC/DC, Metallica, Mötörhead and Ozzy Osbourne it is difficult to choose between the great line-ups that the festival has known over the years. However, the 1988 line-up will not easily be matched with names like Iron Maiden, Kiss and Guns and Roses.

The festival would later move to many countries, but the 1988 line-up is probably one of the most iconic ones…

Fans of both rock and electronic music in the 90s needed to be at V97 Festival. The event hosted Blur, The Prodigy and Foo Fighters, Kula Shaker and Beck as their headliners, and electronic music icons The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk in the Dance Tent!

8. Glastonbury, 2009

When? 24th June – 29th June 2009

In 2009, legends like Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Blur entered Glastonbury's world-famous Pyramid Stage.

But it didn't stop there. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Madness, Bloc Party, Eagles of Death Metal, The Prodigy, Bon Iver, Enter Shikari, and even big pop music icons like Lady Gaga, Calvin Harris, David Guetta and the Black Eyed Peas. Something for everyone!

Can you find your favourite artists on the poster?

7. Coachella, 2011

When? 15th April – 17th April 2011
Where? Indio, California, US

Coachella manages to attract the biggest names on the planet every year. Still, the 2011 line-up is exceptional.

Why?

Just take a look at the smaller names on the poster. Tame Impala, the Tallest Man on Earth, Cage the Elephant, Two Door Cinema Club, Elbow, Foals, Tinie Tempah, Trentemøller, SBTRKT…

And we haven't even talked about the headliners yet. Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Kanye West, the Black Keys, Interpol, The Chemical Brothers, Robyn, The National, Duran Duran, Mumford & Sons, are you keeping up?

 6. Sziget, 2011

When? 8th August – 15th August 2011
Where? Budapest, Hungary

Sziget, a kind of music village where you can really do everything you want. The most important? Enjoying live music, of course!

You should have been there in 2011. It started with the deeply sad news about headliner Amy Winehouse passing away, but the line-up remained impressive with names like The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Pulp, Judas Priest, Mötörhead, Deftones, Kasabian, Skunk Anansie, Kaiser Chiefs and… wait, what?… Prince!

5. Pukkelpop, 1991

When? 25th August 1991
Where? Hasselt, Belgium

As you can see, there were some fantastic names on Pukkelpop's poster in 1991. The Ramones, The Pogues, Sonic Youth… great! But a pleasant surprise was yet to come. When the smallest name on the poster, Limbomaniacs, had to cancel, they were replaced by a nice little band called… Nirvana!

4. Rock Werchter, 2007

When? 28th June – 1st July 2007
Where? Werchter, Belgium

It was a weekend to remember for many in the Belgian town of Werchter. Artists like Metallica, Muse, Beastie Boys, Chemical Brothers, Faithless, Björk, Amy Winehouse, Snow Patrol, Keane, Tori Amos, LCD Soundsystem, John Legend and The Kooks took the stage to give the audience the time of their lives.

But it was Friday’s line-up that gave the festival that golden edge, with names like Kings Of Leon, Queens Of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys and Pearl Jam. That’s what you call a super Friday!

That year's lineup won't be topped anytime soon, right? Well, in the two years that followed, artists like R.E.M., Oasis, Radiohead, Jay-Z and Metallica came to Belgian’s most famous music town. We can’t choose. You?

3. Reading & Leeds Festival, 2008

When? 22th August – 24th August 2008
Where? Reading & Leeds, UK

Reading & Leeds Festival is often compared to Glastonbury, “but its headliners are not as big”.

Excuse me?

Let’s go back to 2008… Rage Against The Machine, Queens Of Stone Age, The Killers, Bloc Party, Metallica, Editors, Tenacious D, Biffy Clyro, Manic Street Preachers, The Last Shadow Puppets, Babyshambles, Vampire Weekend, The Wombats and Slipknot, all in one weekend.

Oh, and what about the “small names”?

Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club, Florence + the Machine, White Lies, Frank Turner… Get yourself a magnifying glass and have a look at the poster below.
